A minimum of thirteen individuals killed and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's economic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in public projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
