Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent presence of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while others lamented how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the redaction procedure.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While the former president's name and image are visible in some of the documents, the extensive redactions prompt significant questions about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of Republicans swiftly demanded increased openness.
“People are raging and walking away,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the law, and implied that a future Congress may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s document release egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Figures Rally Behind the Release
However, a segment of rightwing commentators and Trump allies came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are entirely redacted, and many of the men depicted in pictures have their identities obscured.
But a few do not, including prominent figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed some conservative figures to go on the offensive.
“It’s pretty ironic how the Democrats wrongly accused Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Issues Statement
Clinton has consistently said he was aware of no criminal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been hiding these documents for an extended period only to release them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and hide forever. So they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response added.
Broader Conservative Commentary Remains Muted
Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was comparatively muted after the release, particularly when compared with the loud calls for action that preceded the congressional vote to enact a law requiring the files' publication.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were provided hard-copy folders of materials that included no previously unseen data.
