British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several approach shafts down to the depot... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were a great many British personnel stationed over the festive period. This action, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
